Cause and Treatment of Cataract
1. Knowledge to cataract
Human eyes work as camera that the light penetrates cornea, passes through pupil and lens, then focus on the retina, and form an image at last. Lens is behind iris and pupil, transparent and colorless, similar to glass of magnifier in shape and used to bend light (just as the camera lens). However, when lens is atomized or hardened, it will interferes the penetration of light and hinder the retina receiving clear image, which would obstruct vision and then cause many troubles in daily life and works.
2. Cause of cataract
Mainly caused by increasing age, eye wound (trauma), intraocular diseases (such as glaucoma and uveitis) or long use of steroids, etc.
3. Symptoms of cataract
The initial symptoms are blurred vision, or overlapping images, low sensitivity to colors, sensitiveness to light, giddiness caused by light, or high frequency of spectacles replacement.
4. How to treat cataract
At present, there are no medicines available, including eye drops or internal medicine, which can effectively prevent or cure the cataract. With the improvement in ophthalmic microsurgery techniques and medical equipments, the cataract surgery that has high rate of success and safety is that removes the emulsified lens and replaces it by artificial one. Therefore, when confirmed to be cataract that causes much trouble in works and daily life, an operation shall be considered to cure it.
5. Surgical technique and procedure
Presently, the most widely used surgery is Ultrasonic Phacoemulsification that utilizes ultrasound to emulsify the opaque lens to make it become small fragments which can be adsorbed and removed by handpiece, and a small incision (about 3.0mm) is needed in surgery for a foldable intraocular lens (IOL) implantation by way of injection. Advantages are: Rapidly restoring a better vision, lessening the astigmatism or preventing suture dropping out, moreover, reducing the risks of infection and inflammation after operation. Local anesthesia is only needed in operation, and usually patients can go home and rest without hospitalization after operation.
